Web5. OH + NaOH. Phenol (C 6 H 5 OH) has an enough acidity to react with aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH). As products, sodium phenoxide (salt) and water are given. This reaction is a weak acid - strong base reaction and also important in explaining acidic behavior of organic compounds. Phenylhydrazine forms monoclinic prisms that melt to an oil around room temperature which may turn yellow to dark red upon exposure to air. Phenylhydrazine is miscible with ethanol, diethyl ether, chloroform and benzene. It is sparingly soluble in water.

To this phenomenon, we can name compounds formed this way by applying this rule: (phenyl + substituent).
